Data Publication and Sharing: Hands-On
Workshop by Eliane Blumer and Basma Makhlouf Shabou
The focus of Basma Makhlouf Shabou’s (Archival Science Coordinator HEG Geneva) and Eliane Blumer’s (Research Data Manamgenent Coordinator EPFL) talk was data publication and sharing, i.e. making data available to people other than those who have generated it by providing free, unrestricted access to the public. Today, this is a requirement of many funding agencies and journals, but it should also be in the interest of the researcher. It is crucial to plan the sharing of data in advance with a DMP that includes reflections on access rights, data repositories, hardware, software, and how to apply FAIR principles. Ideally, both curated and raw data (observational data, experimental data, simulations, derived data, and reference data) is openly published.
The two speakers moreover stressed the importance of always publishing good metadata as well, including information on data origin, format, and volume, using open formats whenever possible, and providing software to process it. Data and metadata can be published from the beginning of the project or only at the end in repositories that fit ones needs and context. Some important tips that the speakers gave the participants are to always choose a non-commercial repository, provide the data with unique identifiers, be compliant with standardization in metadata, and be user-friendly. When a dataset is prepared for publishing, it is important that the structure of the folders and files is logical and well-described, sensitive data is adequately coded, an appropriate license is chosen, and a documentation summary (readme file) is shared alongside the (meta-)data.
